The age of video game adaptations is far from over.
Fresh off the success of projects like Fallout and A Minecraft Movie, Xbox has officially set sail on another ambitious adaptation. According to Entertainment Weekly, a live-action Sea of Thieves movie is now in development, bringing Rare's beloved pirate sandbox adventure to the big screen.
The project will be produced by Destin Daniel Cretton, the filmmaker behind Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day. While a director has not yet been attached, the announcement signals that Xbox is continuing to invest heavily in expanding its biggest gaming franchises beyond consoles.
For longtime Sea of Thieves players, the news raises an obvious question: what exactly does a Sea of Thieves movie look like?
Unlike many game franchises, Sea of Thieves does not revolve around a single hero or a tightly scripted narrative. Since its launch in 2018, the game has thrived because of player freedom. Every voyage, treasure hunt, naval battle, and betrayal creates a different story depending on who is holding the controller.
Xbox executive Matt Booty acknowledged that challenge in the Entertainment Weekly report, noting that the true star of Sea of Thieves is its community. That means the filmmakers will have to capture the spirit of the game rather than adapt a specific storyline.
Fortunately, the world of Sea of Thieves offers plenty of material to work with.

The game's universe is packed with cursed skeleton crews, ghostly pirate legends, ancient treasures, sea monsters, rival factions, and supernatural mysteries. The lore has expanded dramatically over the years through Tall Tales, seasonal storylines, and crossover events featuring Pirates of the Caribbean and Monkey Island.
Rather than following a single established character, the film could embrace the same sense of adventure that made franchises like Pirates of the Caribbean so successful. A crew of unlikely pirates searching for a legendary treasure while navigating rival captains, supernatural threats, and the unpredictable seas feels like a natural fit for the franchise.
The timing also makes sense.
Video game adaptations are no longer viewed as risky Hollywood experiments. Fallout became one of Amazon's biggest streaming hits. A Minecraft Movie proved that audiences are willing to show up for game-inspired adventures. Studios are actively searching for recognizable gaming worlds with passionate fan communities.
Sea of Thieves checks every one of those boxes.
What may ultimately determine the film's success is whether it embraces the game's greatest strength: the unpredictable friendships, rivalries, and unforgettable moments that emerge when players create their own stories. The treasure has never been the gold. It has always been the journey.
Are you excited about the live-action Sea of Thieves movie?
⚓ Yes, set sail!
🏴 Maybe, show me a trailer first
💀 I don't think it will work
🎮 I'd rather just play the game
If Xbox and its creative team can capture that feeling, Sea of Thieves could become the next great pirate adventure for a new generation of fans.
For now, no release date has been announced, but one thing is clear: the seas are getting a lot bigger.
